What is the difference between Counsellor & Psychotherapist?

Or how to choose a Counsellor or a Therapist, and what’s the difference? When seeking Counselling for anxiety, depression, chronic aches & pains, compassion fatigue & low self-esteem, these are oft-asked questions in my own practice as well as on Google search in general. Therefore, I thought to write about it answering the questions and help to bring some clarity around the subject.

Sometimes it is hard to stay balanced, counselling, psychotherapy definitely helps! A professional therapist with an integrated approach will help you to heal and guide you with an easy to follow self-care practice using tailored self-help tools from alternate healthcare systems. For instance, no matter what one may be suffering or struggling with, in my counselling and self-care coaching sessions, I may use selected wisdom and tools from scientific bodies of knowledge like physics, psychology, psychiatry, anatomy, physiology, Ayurveda and yoga to help my clients modify their mindset to manifest and achieve their life, relationships, career, health, and spiritual goals.

However, while seeking a suitable professional counsellor, it could be a daunting task to choose between so many different credentials and titles and varied approaches and methodologies used by the professionals. And then the big confusion around the difference between a counsellor and a therapist…

While contemplating to write an article on the subject and helping you with some clarity, like sheer magic, the Universe dropped a wonderful article on my news-feed. Oh yes! The Universe can read your mind, ah haan…this happens with me almost every day. Things just manifest when I am sincerely seeking out something positive, to make me a better Counsellor, a therapist and be able to serve my clients, friends, and families to reach their personal, career and wellness goals.

What’s the difference between Counsellor and Psychotherapist?

Coming back to the wonderful gift from the Universe, the said article…it was so well researched and beautifully written, I could not resist sharing it here for the benefit of with all of you. No need to reinvent the wheel, isn’t it? In a nutshell, when seeking professional help for your bio-psycho-social or spiritual wellbeing, it’s about finding the right person, and not finding the right degree & background. Most counsellors and therapists offer a free telephonic or face-to-face consultation for 15, 20 or 30 minutes. Use it! Book the free appointment. Find out, about not only the education, training, and experience background but mainly whether you can gel with each other or not? Is the counsellor amiable and friendly? Do you feel relaxed and safe in her/his company? Is s/he a pleasant and approachable person? Do you feel respected and understood? And go with your gut feelings…

So here it is, friends, with due acknowledgment to Anna Borges for sharing the wonderful article on Self.com.
